Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh

This is one of the most important districts of Himachal Pradesh located in the central region of the state. The administrative head quarter is located in Hamirpur town. Carved out from the Kangra district in 1972, the district is closely associated with the Katoch dynasty. The Katoch dynasty predominated during the period of Raja Hamir Chand who ruled from 1700 A.D. to 1740 A.D. It was Raja Hamir Chand who built a fort at Hamirpur and the present town derived its name from this king. Hamirpur has the distinction of being the most literate district of the state and amongst top most districts of India in education. The National Institute of Technology is located here.
